Cheers to the upcoming New Year....
It's still like 2 hours away for me until the new year, but I know it is already the new year for people in the East. As for the upcoming new year, I hope I would be able to constantly update my thoughts and other random stuff for the upcoming year. Much thanks to those people who take the time to read my thoughts...I really appreciated it.

Burning Flame II recaps
In light of the upcoming Burning Flame III, I have decided to watch Burning Flame II again. Why BFII and not BFI? Well because I have tapes to BFII but not BFI lol. Anyway, I find that I quite enjoyed it the second time again. Overall I think BFII isn’t as bad as a sequel and can even be said, even better than the sequels to Healing Hands. Their winning factor? Better chemistry in general with every one. There were a bunch of pros about BFII now that I re-watched it again (not that I didn’t like it before, it’s just that I appreciate more now compared to before). I can’t compared it with BFI because sadly, I have only watched clips of BFI. So for those who are looking forward to BFIII, and want a refresher of BFII. If you have not watch BFII and don’t want to be spoiled, do not continue reading.
.//Love Relationships//.
The relationships were quite memorable, and the chemistry between couples are there.
1. Annie Man and Stephen Au: They were adorable as a couple, and their relationship from sifu’s girlfriend/lover and disciple to actual lovers was very enjoyable and hilarious to watch. At first, Stephen had to overcome his viewpoints about them being ‘incestuous’ (though they don’t have the same blood) since Annie is Stephen’s sifu’s girlfriend/lover. Then, they had to hide from the other disciples after they begun dating. After that, they had arguments over whether they should live together, whether he should still be a firefighter, etc. Their best scenes? During one particular fire mission, Annie was also there at the time, and Stephen was running into a dangerous zone to save a person. Then there was a huge explosion, but he ended coming out safe, and Annie rushed to him with tears in her eyes. I think that shows how much she cares for him. Another scene would be Annie finally accepting Stephen as a firefighter. Actually, I looked forward to all of their scene together in the serie. I think they were one of the best things about BFII.
2. Maggie and Wong Hei: Their relationship started off on the wrong foot. Wong Hei thought Maggie is an arrogant bitch, and Maggie though Wong Hei was someone who is always silly and not serious. Through Wong Hei’s daughter, their relationship got closer, and they began to appreciate each other as friends. Maggie & Wong Hei’s relationship was not as cute as Annie & Stephen’s, but I like how they appreciate each other’s attributes and how they bicker with each other over little things. They always seem to be there for each other when they have problems. Because Maggie is dating Wong Hei’s brother, Kevin, they couldn’t be together, but it was cute watching Maggie gradually fall for him. Their best scenes for me? When Wong Hei was teaching Maggie the Para Para dance, how to ballroom dance, and when Maggie had appendicitis and Wong Hei was by her side? And then when Maggie showed up at the wrong time for their date, Wong Hei grabbed her and hugged her saying that it is enough that she came. That was so sweet! Oh and in one scene it was hilarious how he dressed up like a triad to meet Maggie’s father, and the proposal scene was very sweet too. Interesting to note how he has chemistry with both Jessica and Maggie, who are rumored to be rivals/not on good terms. However, I think he has more chemistry with Jessica though, but he does have chemistry with Maggie too.
3. Alex Fong and Yoyo Mung: I would say the couple with least chemistry out the three main couples is Alex-Yoyo, but I thought their relationship was still interesting to watch. I could understand people being bored watching them as a couple because their personalities are very different which leads to lots of fights. Alex Fong is the masculine, somewhat chauvinistic type of guy, while Yoyo is the more shy and innocent girl. Their personalities are so different that I keep on wondering what made them get married in the first place. Later on, after they divorced, we get to saw how they first meet and how it was love at first sight for them. However, I don’t know whether it’s Alex’s acting or it’s very subtle, but whenever Yoyo mentions that she can make him happy whenever he gets mad, I just don’t see it. Yoyo’s character ah Yan can be very, very annoying/childish at times that it can be tiring to watch her. Nonetheless, their relationship was still watchable. I guess, when you see them together for such a long time, you hope to see them stay together.
4. Flora Chan and Alex Fong: Flora plays the third party of Alex & Yoyo’s relationship. However, it’s not hard to see that other than sharing the same tastes, they also share a lot of fate. It turns out that they knew each other when they were young. As kids, they share the same desk of a classroom, but young Flora had class in the morning, and young Alex had class in the afternoon. They communicate by exchanging letters. Young Flora would leave her favorite candy and letters in her desk, and young Alex would receive them and write back. In the present (of the serie), fate likes to play games and they bumped into each other again and again. I wouldn’t say Flora and Alex have a lot of chemistry but I do enjoy watching their ‘fate’ scenes.
5. Maggie Cheung and Kevin Cheng: Maggie has a long teenage crush on Kevin, Wong Hei’s brother in the serie. They ended up dating for a while, but Kevin’s character is quite ambitious and manipulative. At one point in the serie, he even said it is important to find a girlfriend with a clean background. Maggie & Kevin had quite a few scenes as a couple, but they don’t have a lot of chemistry. They were ok as a couple, but Kevin’s character was ‘one foot stepping on two ships’ towards the end, and because Maggie realizes that they share different beliefs, they broke up.
6. Leila Tong and Kevin: They started off as friends. In fact, I don’t even know whether Kevin really likes her because he got closer with her after knowing her god-father is a high fireman official. I don’t think they match each other since Leila looked so young, and they seem more like siblings to me when they are dating.
.//Other Relationships//.
1. Jenny Shing and Wong Hei: Jenny Shing was adorable, and I love watching her and Wong Hei as daughter and father. They seem like real father-daughter too. He always tickles her, and try to make her smile. Her facial expressions were so cute, but it’s really the best when she would bust the adult’s schemes and wishes lol. They never get mad at her for doing it either lol. Her best scene was definitely the ending when she went to Wong Hei’s bed and told her uncle that she knew her dad would never come home.
2. Annie and Yoyo: They are good friends in this serie, and I quite like watching their scenes together. It’s not like they have extreme chemistry as friends, but I quite like how Annie is always there for Yoyo when she has problems, and vice-versa but it was usually Annie there more for Yoyo. There are many scenes of them talking to each other about their problems or just hanging out, and these scenes are very nice to watch. I miss watching friendships like these.
3. Stephen Au and Wong Hei: Stephen Au is Wong Hei’s elder brother in-law, and they don’t get along very well. I think they’re quite hilarious to watch. They always bicker over Yiu Yiu (Wong Hei’s daughter), trying to win her attention and love. Despite their many bickerings and opposite beliefs, deep down, they do care for each other. At the beginning they don’t get along, but later on, they give each other advices about the relationships with Annie and Maggie respectively. I wish they had more scenes together though.
4. Jenny Shing and Stephen Au: They were also very cute to watch as uncle and niece. I’ll bet when people watch BFII or remember BFII, they would only remember Jenny with Wong Hei, but Jenny was actually pretty cute with Stephen Au too. Before he got with Annie Man’s character, there was even a point in which Jenny Shing was more attached to him more than Wong Hei, and of course there was the ending scene between them two.
5. Flora and Yoyo: Flora became Yoyo’s boss after Yoyo decided to separate with Alex Fong. Flora became somewhat of a mentor to her, and they became good friends after a while. I guess Flora served as Yoyo’s motivation since she is really intelligent and individualistic. I also like watching them as friends, so it was good to know that they still ended up as friends.
6. Wong Hei, Ellesmere Choi, Cheung Chi Kwong and the rest of the firemen on Wong Hei’s crew: They play good buddies and partners at the fire station. They have good chemistry with each other, and it seems like they really have fun together. Especially love the scene in which Wong Hei posed as Miss. HK winning, and Alex Fong came out and presented him the helmet…yup Miss. Hk music and all.
7. Yuen Wah and Leila's family: Leila is Yuen Wah’s daughter, in which he hasn’t seen in a long time. The mom is mad at Yuen Wah because he failed to save their young son's life many, many years ago. Later on, they try to convince the mom to forgive Yuen Wah, and those scenes were quite funny.
8. Stephen Au’s si hing-dai/group of friends: This is the group that included the young Ron Ng and Johnson Lee (Chi Ling and Lee Sai Man from Twins of Brothers!). The group does provide some comical relief especially when it comes to Stephen and Annie, but aren’t really that necessary.
.//Best Fire Scenes//.
-The mission in which Alex Fong saved the rest of the team by blowing up a wall, and Wong Hei, Ellesmere, and Cheung Chi Kwong grew to respect and admire him. He lit several gas bottles (I'm assuming) and it blew up the wall. It was pretty cool.
-There was another scene in which Stephen Au jumped onto what looks like a bamboo structure (you know, the stuff they used to build buildings with) to save someone, and Wong Hei rescue him, and then later on when a metal structure fell from above, Stephen pushed Wong Hei so that it wouldn't hit him.
-As mentioned above, when Annie saw Stephen Au coming out of the explosion
-There was a brief rescue mission with dogs, and I liked it because it showed a shot of the firemen looking very relaxed and happy after the dogs were rescued. It seem like a very blissful moment.
-The five-grade fire mission when it showed all the family members/friends of the main firemen (Wong Hei, Alex Fong, Stephen Au, Yuen Wah) worrying for them. I think it was really realistic and yet, also warm how they show these people caring for them. We see Flora and Yoyo looking at the news coverage of the fire on the streets/work. We see Maggie worried about Wong Hei at the scene. We see Annie rushing and being there at the scene. And we see Yuen Wah's family watching the news coverage at home.
.//Other Bonuses//.
-Screen-time of young Bosco, Ron, and Kenneth and Jack Wu. I did not even realize these good-looking guys when I watched it the first time. Bosco actually has a lot more lines than Ron at the beginning since he was part of Wong Hei’s diving team.
-Three Fa Dans in just this serie alone. Jessica Hsuan plays Wong Hei’s dead wife, Flora plays the third party to Alex Fong-Yoyo’s relationship, and Maggie Cheung Hoi Yee is a pair with Wong Hei/Kevin Cheng.
-Gilbert Lam is a great actor, and it is a shame TVB let him go. In BFII, he plays a gay guy, and while his subplot may not be that important and sometimes a little annoying (since his actions/influence on Yoyo angers his brother a lot), I enjoyed his presence and his tragic ending.
-I didn't know who Leila Tong or Kevin Cheng were before this serie, so there's another bonus.
.//Some Questions To Think About//.
1. Why Yuen Wah doesn’t save all the children instead of one by one? In this serie, Yuen Wah’s son died because at one fire mission, he saved all the other kids before his son. But I was thinking, how come he and the other firemen not save two or three kids out at the same time? It seemed like they saved one kid at a time, but if they saved two or three at the same time, the building might not have collapsed on his son.
2. Is it wrong for Annie Man to be mad at Stephen Au for being a firefighter and calling off the wedding? When I watched this the first time, I thought Annie was being childish for being angry at Stephen Au being a firefighter. Now, after I watched again the second time, I think she was still wrong for trying to force Stephen Au to stop being a firefighter, but I can understand why she was horrified. The girl saw with her own eyes how dangerous a mission is, and she experienced losing a lover (the sifu) before, so it’s understandable that she only wants the best for Stephen Au, even though it's something he wants to do.
3. If Alex Fong were to meet Flora and Yoyo at the same time, who would he choose? At the same time, I think he would choose Flora. I think, with Yoyo, it’s because they’ve been together for five years, so overtime his love grew for her. Even when they meet, they met at secluded airport base in which she is the only thing to keep him amused. But if it was at the same time, I think he would choose Flora since they share a lot of similarities of thinking and interests. At the end of the day, it’s nice if your spouse is sweet and caring, but it’s even better if they understand you and share your beliefs/thinking which I believe Flora is more capable of. Yes, Yoyo understands Alex Fong too but there are many times throughout the series that she just doesn’t understand and listen to him. For example, the bringing cake to the station which he repeatedly asks her not to do so, but she does. Later on, when she changed, she was capable of understanding him, but then she was almost like Flora 2.0 - mature and confident.
4. Isn’t it strange that Yoyo revealed that she received Alex Fong’s email when the email doesn’t exist? It is weird because supposedly Yoyo receives Alex Fong’s email even though the emails supposely didn’t go through. I think the first one probably didn’t, but I think Yoyo probably set up an account which received the rest of the emails because whenever Alex Fong pressed send after the first email, the scene did not continue onwards to show that it was an error.
5. Do I like the ending? Wong Hei’s ending was sad, but yet it was memorable for the serie. Whenever it gets to the scene when Yiu Yiu cries about realizing her dad is gone, I would tear up. That scene is probably somewhere up the “Top 10 TVB scenes to make you cry” list. I feel so bad for Yiu Yiu and who wouldn’t if you seen the whole serie? Throughout the series, we saw her and Wong Hei together so much, it’s like a bond that you want to keep forever.
How could Maggie live with Yiu Yiu (Jenny Tsing) after Wong Hei died? Maggie wasn’t Wong Hei’s wife yet, so shouldn't Yiu Yiu live with Stephen (the uncle) instead? I think they did that so that Maggie wouldn’t be alone, but legally I believe the chances are low that she could adopt or be Yiu Yiu’s guardian though.
Loved Stephen & Annie’s ending. Glad to see they had a happy ending together. Overall, the ending was alright. The only ending scene I didn’t like was Yoyo and Alex’s. Their scenes just don’t show how Yoyo cares about Alex romantically. She seems so independent and career-driven and not a least bit interested in Alex again. As I said before, having seen them for so long, I wanted to see them together, but still their getting back together again wasn’t as great as I hope it would be.
6. So now am I looking forward to Burning Flame III? VERY MUCH SO! Other than Bosco Wong, thanks to BFII, I’m really hyped up for BFIII. Can’t wait to see Wong Hei again! I can’t wait to see how the relationships and friendships would be written, and (hopefully) the great chemistry between everyone! And of course the potential uprising stars that might make some appearances aka the young Rons, Boscos, Jack Wu, etc. of today. I wonder who would sing the themesong? Andy Lau and Aaron Kwok did a good job with the songs for BFI and BFII respectively, but I doubt they would sing for BFIII. I hope Eason would sing the themesong, and Miriam would sing the sub-themesong.

Reading the comments at AF, it seems like a lot of people were surprised that The Family Link beat Heart of Greed. I was a little surprised as well, but am more gleeful that The Family Link and Father and Sons beat the oh-so prestigious Heart of Greed in ratings. I was more surprised that Ten Brothers is so up there on the list and behind HOG. Ten Brothers to me was only an average production to me. The storyline was plain, and some could even say exaggerated and silly. I remember I did enjoy it but it's not in my "the best TVB series" list. Being 4th on the list definitely surprised me.

9) War and Destiny - Average 29.7
10) Men Don't Cry - Average 29.4
....which is relatively different than Wikipedia: Top 10 Series with Ratings, which I think only calculates the last week of airing. Correct me if wrong.

Myolie in Burning Flame 3?
Asianfanatics: Kevin will cooperate with Myolie Wu in Burning Flame 3
Keep in mind that this news has not been confirmed. This piece of info was found from a piece of article at this Baidu site. I like Myolie, so I am glad if she is able to participate in such a grand production. However, I am not very happy with the idea that she might potentially pair up with Bosco again. Sure, they have only paired up twice with War of in Laws, but all these rumors of them are constantly in the news, and it's getting annoying seeing the two of them together. Not to mention how much more gossip/rumors there would probably be after War of in Laws 2. They really need to take a break from each other from series since they have so much rumors with their personal lives. Give the audience a break. After all, they have plenty of opportunities to pair with each other in the distant future. I really hope that they would both pair up with different people in BFIII, if Myolie is indeed in it. Heck, I don't even mind seeing him with Kate Tsui, Fala, or even a newer actress.
What does everyone think?

Rumors of Sonija Kwok leaving TVB......
Asianfanatics News: TVB #1 Sister Spot Vacant, Sonija Kwok Will Not Renew TVB Contract
Picture from: Muzi
This is probably last week’s news, but it seems to be one of the popular TVB topics recently, so of course I would have some thoughts. I was quite surprise from reading various posts that people actually like Sonija as an actress and want her to stay at TVB. Since when did Sonija gain so much supporters?
Frankly, I am not a big fan of Sonija Kwok as an actress, but she seems to give me the image that she’s very intelligent and mature (the type who knows what they are doing) person. Because of that, I can never have the image of her as a vile or “slutty” person like the HK media suggests with her stealing Michael Tao away from his wife and all. However, these bad rumors with male costars hurts her image as an actress. It really sucks for her because supposedly she has improved a lot in her recent series from mainland and TVB. I haven’t watched these series, but I saw clips of her in Land of Wealth, and she was indeed more natural than her past performances in Angels of Mission, Where the Legend begins, Family Man, etc.
If she does leave, it’s a big risk, but somehow I think it’s a realistic and smart decision on her part. Due to their promotion of younger actresses and having more veterans coming back to act, would TVB give Sonija more screentime/roles in future series? What is more possible is that TVB is probably going to cast her in more mainland series in the future, so shouldn’t she take advantage of that first and take the opportunity to earn more by herself/another management company?
And well, is it a huge lost for TVB fans if Sonija indeed leaves? Yes, while Sonija is very beautiful, and it would be nice to see her in some future series. However, I’ve never felt that she has tremendous chemistry with other actors and actresses in series. I would say, I like watching her the most with Moses, but their chemistry isn’t that strong either. For TVB actresses, it’s very important to be able to generate chemistry with onscreen partners because they have to pair up with other actors for other series, and two, it’s something that makes a series more interesting to watch. For example, Ron and Kate = very minimal chemistry in The Brink of Law. If they were able to generate more chemistry, it would’ve made their scenes and TBOL even better to watch, instead of dozing off whenever they’re onscreen. And that is how I feel with Sonija in past series…it’s nice if she’s in a serie, but if she’s gone, it doesn’t make much of a difference. Of course my opinion might change after watching her newer series, but that’s then and this is now, so if Sonija leaves TVB, I wish her the best with her career in the Mainland.

Unveil the Masks- a fanfiction plot
Every once in a while, I would have an idea to write a fanfiction, but I usually don’t get myself together to start and finish them. So I’ve decided to write these story plots out instead, and maybe whenever I get myself to actually start them later on, then I would remember from these posts.
The first fanfiction idea I had in mind now is inspired by the Korean series ‘All About Eve’. Since TVB focuses on different themes in their series, I’ve always hoped TVB would film a series that is focused on journalism and news reporting like ‘All About Eve’ did. So here is my fanfiction story plot. The people in parenthesis are the people who I would like to be those characters.

Unveil The Masks, a fanfiction
In the broadcasting journalism world, to succeed, one must have perseverance, good communication skills, and of course talent. Being in the industry for years, Tsui Yuen Bing (Michelle Yim) is heavily regarded as the most successful news anchor at LTVS station and in Hong Kong. Having her own news program and maintaining her position as Chief Anchor of the station makes her at the top of the game. But wishing to retire soon, she hopes that her daughters would be able to make a place for themselves and take her place one day at the station.
Shum Kwan Yue (Tavia) is Tsui Yuen Bing’s (Michelle) daughter with her ex-husband, Shum Gin Cheorng (Damian Lau), who is the current president of the news division at LTVS. Although she was raised by her father and stepmom, she admires her mother’s career as a successful anchorswoman. Intelligent, optimistic and somewhat innocent, Kwan Yue (Tavia) wishes to follow in her mother’s footsteps. However, her half-sisters and fellow interns at the station, Mok Yi Han (Shirley) and Shum Suet Ting (Leila) may not make her path any easier.
Mok Yi Han (Shirley) is the daughter of Tsui Yuen Bing (Michelle) & her current husband, Mok Bong (Ng Wai Kwok), who is currently working at rival station, ZTN. Ambitious and often blunt, Yi Han (Shirley) would do whatever it takes to get what she wants. She has issues of resentment against her father for being less successful than her mom and just a mere cameraman working at the lesser valued broadcasting station, ZTN.
Suet Ting (Leila) is the daughter of Shum Gin Cheorng (Damian) and his current wife, Kwok Hoi Lam (Sheren Teng), who is often consider the second-best news anchorwoman at the station. Due to her mother’s jealous nature and influence,Suet Ting (Leila) is often jealous of Kwan Yue (Tavia), who seems to be Gin Cheorng’s (Damian) favorite daughter. On the outside, she appears to be a good sister to Kwan Yue (Tavia), but on the inside, she is secretly competing with Kwan Yue (Tavia) to beat her in love and career.
With regards to romance, all three sisters are interested in the dashingly handsome and charming Lai Jun Kwong (Ron), who is not only the only son of the stations’s (LTVS) owner, Lai Hung (Kenneth Tsang), but who also wishes to make a successful career as a news anchorman himself. Although Jun Kwong (Ron) was initially attracted to Yi Han (Shirley) because of the chase, he finds himself falling for the sweet girl, Kwan Yue (Tavia), after getting to know her better. Because of their rivalry with Jun Kwong (Ron), Yi Han (Shirley) enlists Suet Ting‘s (Leila) help to ensure problems for Kwan Yue (Tavia) at the station. After one failed attempt, Yi Han (Shirley) was found out to be a culprit, and thus was frozen by the company to work on side projects. It can be said there’s always bound to be some fortune wrapped around misfortune because she meets Fong Siu Hong (Bosco), a carefree and fun cameraman and photographer. He convinces Yi Han (Shirley) to let go of her anger and to have fun. Because of Siu Hong’s (Bosco) constant support, she eventually gets on the right path again. Meanwhile, Suet Ting (Leila) finally achieves to bring Kwan Yue (Tavia) down when she manages to steal Jun Kwong’s (Ron) heart away from her and took her spot as newscaster at 6:00PM. Seeing her half-sisters being so successful in love and career even though they are horrible people, Kwan Yue (Tavia) cries injustice and vows revenge on them both.
Knowing the playboy son of rival station ZTN, Chow Man Tim (Raymond), is interested in her, she seduces him and manages to climb the ladder up at that station. Giving her sisters a taste of their own medicine, Kwan Yue (Tavia) uses some dirty tricks up her sleeves to wreck havoc on her half-sister’s lives in love and career, while keeping a benevolent and caring appearance. After a series of problems, Suet Ting (Leila) and Yi Han (Shirley) both realized Kwan Yue’s (Tavia) harmful intentions and worked to counter Kwan Yue’s (Tavia) attacks.
And while the younger gals are duking it out over love and career, the moms are not far behind their daughter’s plans and schemes. While both are hoping to see their own daughters at the top, they haven’t taken themselves out of the race either. Hoping to take over Tsui Yuen Bing’s (Michelle Yim) spot at the station, Kwok Hoi Lam (Sheren) plans various plot holes for Tsui Yuen Bing (Michelle Yim) to fall into. Tsui Yuen Bing (Michelle Yim) is not weak at this game either and works to tarnish Kwok Hoi Lam’s (Sheren) reputation in the process.
Racing against each other to become the top news-anchors woman spot in Hong Kong, who would eventually make it? Would they each know the limits or would they end up failing horribly? A story filled with angst, excitement, and a touch of romance, as the characters get involved with journalism and broadcasting, it would definitely keep you at the edge of your seat.

Gentle Reflections; 恨锁金瓶
When I was younger, Gentle Reflections was one of my favorite TVB series. For some reason, it was often repeated on cable so when I was younger so I always watch it whenever I see it on. The themesong and themevideo always captivated me to watch. The themesong was sang by Irene Wan, the main actress who played Poon Kum Lien, and the song sounds really beautiful and also quite poetic.
Other than the themesong, I love the beginning of the themevideo. I always thought it was the best themevideo TVB made because of the beginning with the Chinese words flowing down behind the paintings of the main female characters like it's about to introduce a Chinese novel. The animated paintings of the main female characters as they gradually turned to show their faces and smile, are also very beautifully created and considerably modern for the 90s. At the end of the themevideo, they showed all three main characters together casually relaxing. It has a nice flow to the end, considering they started with introduction of each of the main characters and then ending it with all three of them together. Even to this day, I have not seen another ancient TVB themevideo that is as comparably as ancient and stunning. Along with the song, it just automatically captivates your attention.
Watching all of the wives interacting in the series, it can be said that it was the '90s version of War & Beauty regarding how women were fighting for power within the household, resorting to not only verbal insults but also scheming various ploys to harm the other wives to gain favor or attention. Costume-wise, the clothes the actresses wore were all very beautiful and colorful, and yet quite representative of their characters. For example, Ping Yee (Kenix) and the first wife who were quite conservative generally wore thicker outfits that covered their bodies, while Kum Lien (Irene) wore outfits that were more thin.
It was also the first serie I began to like Kenix Kwok. I love her character Ping Ye, and I like how Kenix portrayed her. I liked Ping Yee when she was an honest maid with a kind heart, who eventually fell for her husband played by Patrick Tam. I even liked her when she vowed revenge on Xi Men Hing and became his wife. Ping Yee possessed some conscience compared to the other wives in the family with regards to scheming. I like how she is more observant and calm (which shows how intelligent she is) while the other wives were too brash with their plots. Kenix also has beauty along with poise and elegance which makes the character Ping Yee believable when she portrays someone with no motives in the Xi Men household while in reality being the silent, but intelligent and calculative type of women. It is no wonder she was able to captured the hearts of three men within the series! I do believe Xi Men Hing loved her the most out of all his wives, Mo Chong had feelings for her until the day she died, and of course her husband loves her enough to change himself for her.
Within this serie, the only male-female relationship I enjoyed watching was Ping Yee's relationship with her husband played by Patrick Tam, which was very enduring to watch. It was very sweet how he tries to win her heart and also turn into a better person during the same time. Kenix and Patrick had very nice chemistry together as a couple.
I've always known the story of Poon Kum Lien and her hermit husband Mo Dai Long, Mu Chong, and Xi Men Hing were from a Chinese novel, but I didn't know that Gentle Reflections is based off another Chinese novel named 金瓶梅 or "Plum in the vase". However, for TVB's title, the word 梅 was left off. Since the serie focused more on the rivalry between Poon Kum Lien and Li Ping Yee, and there was almost next to none with Chun Mui, it's understandable her name was left off the title. The characters of Ping Yee and Chun Mui in Gentle Reflections were relatively different than the novel. In the novel, Ping Yee has romantic feelings for Xi Men Hing while in the TVB serie, she was written to be somewhat more as a protagonist who married him to get revenge. Personally, I liked how TVB changed her character so that the audience could see a different perspective within the Xi Men residence. All these wives are vying for Xi Men Hing's affection for power or love, but because Ping Yee isn't vying for his affections because she cares for him or needs the power, the audience gets a better image of these other wives in the household.
The character Chun Mui was also suppose to be another concubine who rise to power within the household in the novel, but she was written to be a pure-hearted girl in the TVB serie. I guess in doing so, we have three sides of the spectrum in this serie....the pure protagonist (Chun Mui), the character in shades of gray (Ping Yee), and the villain (Poon Kum Lien). I think the actress who played Chun Mui did a decent job, but there wasn't much focus on her character. I think her character mostly serves as a reminder that Kum Lien and Ping Yee were once like her with respect to morals and conscience, and that they were once good friends.
The character and actions of Poon Kum Lien seems very similar to the one in the novel, so I would say her depiction in Gentle Reflections is probably the one that stays true to the novel the most. I think Irene did a good job portraying Kum Lien, and sometimes I do pity her character in the serie because all the men she cared for loved Ping Yee more, and Ping Yee was treated better even after she married into the Xi Men residence. However, I never got the gist that she was evil to the core. I think TVB/Irene tried to portray Kum Lien as a villain who was forced to do the wrong things because of the circumstances, but I could be wrong since my memory is fuzzy about the particular details.
If you want to read more about this novel which Gentle Reflection is loosely based on, here is the Wiki Link: Jin Ping Mei, and a comics version: Golden Lotus
If TVB decides to remake another one of its series, I hope it would remake this one according to TVB's older version. As for who I would cast, I think for sure, I would cast Tavia Yeung as Ping Yee. Tavia has the beauty, poise, and elegance that Kenix had. I think she would pull the role off well. As for Poon Kum Lien, I think Fala has the looks since she is very pretty, but I don't know about her acting and accent. As for the role of Chun Mui, I would like to see Leila Tong or Shirley Yeung in the role but it's not very challenging though. However, Chan Hoi Yee (To Love with No Regrets, The Academy) has some similar features with the actress who played Chun Mui in Gentle Reflections.
I don't know why TVB have not released the DVD version of this serie because I sure would buy it! And given the responses that I've seen regarding this serie online, it seems that a lot of people also enjoy this serie too. Hopefully they would release it on DVD later on.

一醉化千愁 Lyrics
Sang by: Irene Wan Pik Han
Lyrics by: ??
English Translation/Interpretation by: Jadedreams, please credit if used.
愛過与痛過會否亦凝同,
Would those who have loved and pained agree,
被愛去愛各自有心痛
Being loved and to love can be heartbreaking respectively
夢過与醉過,分手相愛与相逢,
[Like] To have dreamt and to have been drunk,
separating and falling in love comes across by chance,
情緣离合匆匆仿似風。
The separation and adjoining of fated feelings comes quickly like the wind.
冷暖這世界,太多愛共情,
With coldness and warmth in this world, there's just too much love and sentiments
[to consider],
未覺暖意愛念已冰凍,
Though have not sensed the trace of warmth, the thought of love already
becomes frozen,
遙遙長路里,方向各不同,
The long road is distant and far away, the path to take to each their own,
我与晚星飛縱。
The evening stars and I are set free.

纏綿夢里,一醉化千愁,
[With] Lingering dreams, once drunk will disperse great worries
情緣何用心傷透,
Why are there intentions to wound fated feelings,
緣來緣又盡,風雨里飄流,
Fate comes and fate goes, the wind and rain drifts and flows
繁華年月都飄走,
The lively years and months would soon float away,
纏綿夢里一醉化千愁,
[With] Lingering dreams, once drunk will disperse great worries
情緣何用心傷透,
Why are there intentions to wound fated feelings,
人潮來又往,春雨向東流,
The people tide comes and goes, spring rain flows towards the east,
化作雨絲千万縷。
Transforming rain into millions of thin threads.

Blessing Ceremony:
I'm looking forward to this serie, not only because Shirley is in this serie, but also because I like a majority of the people in the cast. None of them are that popular save for Nancy Sit and Shirley Yeung, so there probably isn't going to be a lot of hype with this serie. I really like Charmaine Li, and I think she has a lot of potential when it comes to acting. Whenever I see her onscreen, she just seems like she's very passionate acting her characters out. In the promotional book, they said Patrick Tang was in this serie, but there is no picture of him in the blessing ceremony. I wonder if he's still in it. If he is, this serie would be even better. I quite like Patrick Tang since I've liked all of his past characters. His acting could be improved, but nonetheless, he gives a decent performance most of the time.
I'm guessing this serie is about the silver business in the Man Chor period and a lot of women bickering? Heart of Greed Man Chor period lol? The English and Chinese titles don't really appeal to me that much. Anyhoo, this is what the cast's role so far.......
Chun Pui- Patriarch of the family
Nancy Sit- Chun Pui’s First Wife
Rebecca Chan- Chun Pui’s Second Wife
Christine Ng- Chun Pui’s Third Wife
Nancy Wu- Chun Pui’s Fourth Wife
Shirley Yeung- Maid of Third Wife?(She said in her blog that she is loyal to Christine Ng's character.)
Charmaine Li- Chun Pui's Daughter?
Matt Yeung- Chun Pui’s son
Jack Wu- Worker
Ng Wai Kwok- ?
Jack Wu will be having a romantic triangle with Shirley and Charmaine Li. I think he looks compatible with both Shirley and Charmaine. However, I read that......
"Shirley explained that she plays a maid in the series, which is a period drama set in the 1920's and in one scene, her character shows her body to the young master, played by Matt Yeung (揚明). She also has to film a scene where she is bathing under a waterfall and she said that she is quite worried about shooting this in the cold weather and keeping warm. She said she will also be bullied by Rebecca Chan (陳秀珠) in the show." from Batgwa.com
so I wonder if Shirley and Matt are a couple before or after Jack and her?

Marriage & TVB Original 7 Fa Dans....
Back from finals, and I was totally surprised, as I imagine probably all TVB fans were, from the joyous news that Ada Choi announced her upcoming marriage plans with Max Zhang! I admire how she was able to keep the relationship underground. In that way the media doesn't.........1) spread lies or overexaggerate things that would eventually cause problems for the relationship.......or 2) focus too much on their relationship that it affects their career somewhat, especially if they are still young. I guess it was easier for Ada since her boyfriend works in the mainland mostly, and not in HK. If he was in HK, it might've been harder to conceal the relationship. Whatever it is, congrats to Ada and her fiance, and looking forward to see pictures of her in her real wedding dress!!

Bosco Wong & Shirley Yeung - My Favorite Couple
Over the years watching TVB series, I have many favorite TVB couples, from classic ones to Louis Koo & Jessica and Michael Tao & Kenix Kwok to younger couple pairings of today such as Ron & Leila and Bosco & Tavia. However, I will have to focus on these other couples at a later date. Today, I'll like to focus on the couple that is at the top of my personal favorites as of this year.
Bosco & Shirley was not a very popular TVB couple and is still not a very popular couple nowadays, but they are at the top of my favorite young TVB couple list. Most of their series are either shelved (Au Revoir Shanghai, The Price of Greed) or raved as the Worst series made for that year (Au Revoir Shanghai, Devil's Disciple). And when I first heard they were casted to be in series together like Au Revoir Shanghai and The Price of Greed, I wasn't interested at all. They weren't a couple I cared for then, it was like whatever. However, I guess it was a boring summer day or whatnot, that I somehow watched a Shirley and Bosco fanvideo of them in Devils' Disciple on Youtube with the themesong of The Whitehair Maiden playing. The way the video was made along with the music really captivated my attention. I was thinking, well someone made this nice video of them together, so the story of their relationship in the series must be very, very romantic and good. Well, obviously I was wrong....but I digress, I should continue on with my story. So I decided to watch Devil's Disciple. Not only was Shirley not in the series in the beginning for like the first 9-10 episodes, but Bosco never loved her! I guess the only good thing was that they got married and had a kid in the end, and I deduced that he grew to love her eventually, but man, the scene in which he confronted Bernice about marrying Shirley was heartbreaking. Bosco's eyes were like screaming, "I don't want too, but I have too. I love you (to Bernice) but I have to be responsible." (Good job for Bosco really, but absolutely killed Shirley & Bosco as a couple in there). But anyway, I watched on, hoping that they would maybe have more scenes to show Bosco falling in love with Shirley, but nope, throughout the rest of the serie, it was just like watching him respectfully interacting with a friend. So yeah, eventually they had a good ending, but it wasn't exactly a relationship that's worth rooting for. It was a pity though, because they looked absolutely beautiful as an ancient couple (if you don't look at Bosco's hair in the back) and when Bosco wore white along with Shirley. They look gorgeous together, so it was sad they didn't have a good love story to back them up as a couple. But even though their story sucked, I just had to see whether they have any chemistry in previous series because their chemistry in here was pretty much close to non-existent although they look beautiful together. So I watched Au Revoir Shanghai.
Now in Au Revoir Shanghai, their story together isn't too bad except Shirley's character liked Power Chan's character for like 3/4 of the whole series, while Bosco was just having a crush on her. They had very few interactions as a couple, but more as just friends most of the time, but nonetheless they had some cute scenes together. So there is hope! In this one, they had a happy ending, but I was not happy about their development as a couple. It was so sudden how she liked Power Chan for such a long time, and then liked Bosco. It just seems like Shirley liked Bosco just because he got hurt and sacrificed a lot. It's like she switched roles with him in Devils' Disciple haha. But nonetheless, I do think they both liked each other a lot towards the end. Horrible haircuts though, but my conclusion afterwards was that, there's hope because they were cute as a couple. Then, I moved onto The Price of Greed.
I really didn't expect that much from The Price of Greed, but this serie pretty much sealed the deal for me actually. It wasn't that their love relationship was written that great. It was actually pretty much one-sided since Bosco treats Shirley as just his sister in the entire serie even though they're not really brothers and sisters with the same blood. Shirley plays a mute girl in this serie, so they had to communicate by sign language and other means. But when they interact in the serie, I find that they do have some chemistry together! Even though their relationship is mostly platonic throughout the serie, the way he hugs her or touches her face, or how she looks at him are all very simple gestures, but yet they seem so comfortable and nice together, like they understand each other very well when they are alone. I think it can be very, very romantic how there's no conversation and the couple is relaxed and comfortable with each other...off in their own world. Their chemistry isn't the type that is explosive, but it's somewhat like a baby fire slowly burning. It's not as strong yet, but it's definitely there so I think if they were given another opportunity with a better storyline to work with, they just might be the next popular admired couple at TVB.
I have watched Find the Light years ago, but Shirley and Bosco do not end up together. I kind of want to watch again just to see if they have any nice scenes together, but then I remember I loved Bosco and Tavia in that serie (in which I thought BoTa was a very promising couple), So yes, I have faith in my Bosco and Shirley, one day, hopefully they will make heads turn!
However, it's interesting to note, other than Find the Light, in all 3 series, Au Revoir, Price of Greed, and Devils' Disciple, Bosco and Shirley had a younger counterpart story. In Au Revoir, they were little kids playing with the radio....in Price of Greed, they grew up together.....in Devils' Disciple, I believe there was a scene in which Bosco’s younger version helped saved her or calmed her. And plus, all four series they acted in together were ancient! I thought that was pretty interesting. I would like to see them in a modern serie. Despite being two years older than Bosco in reality, Shirley actually looks the same age or younger than him so it should be ok.
Perhaps I'm being too optimistic with this couple, but I do hope that maybe they would prove me right in the not too distant future. But even if not, I enjoyed their scenes together as a couple in past series, and they did play an initial part in pushing my drive to update this blog.
Well if you have time, please visit my other fan blog specifically for Bosco & Shirley: http://chakkei.blogspot.com/

Kindred Spirit Moments
Kindred Spirit is re-airing again, and there is this article with Lee See Kei and Nancy Sit’s opinion about various moments in TVB Weekly #538 pg. 40-44. I’ll do my best to translate their opinions, but if I get something wrong, please correct me.
///The Most Crying Without End…
Lee See Kei: The moment I remember the most was when my daughter in law, ah Kum (Louisa So) donated her liver to her son, and at the end, she died due to complications. Before she died, the whole family had their farewells with her, and many tears flowed out.
Nancy Sit: After Lap Sung (her son in Kindred Spirit) got out of prison, he felt worthless. So I, being the mom, went to scream at him. Remember that there were about hundred of people around us, and they see us so into the acting, everyone was touched and eyes were teary.
///The Most Nerve-Wrecking….
Lee See Kei: Tzi Ho (Yung Yee’s son) chased the rich girl May May, and finding out that she’s not the Duke’s daughter, he left her. Afterwards, he even kidnapped Lui Fong’s character, pushing him into the ocean. This plot was at its highest peak.
Nancy Sit: When May May (Ma Tai Lo) was preparing to jump off the building moment, we were on a resident’s building filming the entire evening, and when May May attempts a dangerous action, we were so into the filming that we got a complaint against us for disturbing people sleeping.
///The Most Funniest….
Lee See Kei:May May and Law Sung Moon (Michael Tse) were bickering opposites, but later on became a couple. They were always acting mischeviously, at times also acting in ancient costumes. It was very funny.
Nancy Sit: Kindred Spirit has a lot of dinner scenes, but after filming for a while, the food gets cold. And we would like to pick these food items and put them onto this actor or that actor’s bowl, so their bowl would be filled up, and they don’t know whether to eat or not. The audience does not realize it when watching on tv, but we would laugh so much.
///The Most Romantic….
Lee See Kei: Ah hoi (Ben Wong), Choi Yui (Angie Cheung), and Seung Seung (Law Lam?)’s relationship was very touching. The story says Seung Seung gave up her son and have him replace Choi Yui’s dead child. There was a scene in which Ho Yee (Nancy Sit) and I try to convince her not to do it. After this scene, Nancy and I were crying till our hearts were pained.
Nancy Sit: When “Mow Si” and I were dating, we were wearing matching couple outfits, and going up to the mountaintop, beach, couple’s hotspot having a good time. At that time, there were very few middle age couples dating, so “Mow Si” and I were consider an breakthrough.
///The Most Feedback….
Lee See Kei: When ‘Upper class person’ (Sherng Dun Yun) came on the scene, there was a lot of feedback. The audience likes to see how the Upper class person’s in-laws bicker with the Cha Siu Bing’s family. And also May May coining various terms like “Kei Ying”, “Mah Ying”. Going out, there are a lot of people who uses those nicknames.
Nancy Sit: Ah Hoi, Lap Sung, Cha Siu Bing, ah ? in the series were occasionally kidnapped for ransom. Once Siu Man (Winnie Yeung) was held captive by Chi Ho. Everytime there is this plot, a lot of the audience would ask me what the ending would be.
///The Most Representative of Myself…..
Lee See Kei: In Kindred Spirit, with regards to big or small problems, “Sin Yee” plays a part being a moderator, so every acting scene could represent “Sin Yee’s” importance in the family.
Nancy Sit: “How Yi’s” character likes to benefit with small things and is very commanding?, but in the scene visiting Lap Sun in prison, one could see that all she is doing is for her son, having a lot of true kindred feelings within her.
I’m not quite sure what the last one on the magazine is about, so I’m going to skip it. Now for my thoughts on Kindred Spirit. Kindred Spirit is definitely one of TVB classic serie. When I was young, it was a must-watch drama for the family on cable. I think it's the only serie which was actually pretty up to date compared to other series (somehow the series we watch on cable were always two years behind). I think ah Hoi and ah Kwai’s relationship was very romantic and also quite funny. Even when there was a third party, I still supported them as a couple. I’m glad to see they have a good ending together. As for the most memorable, I remember they enacted a stage show with Nicholas Tse as ah Hoi and Seung Seung’s son. Nic’s supposedly really good at making BBQ pork I think, and he was angry at ah Hoi for not being with his mom. I thought that was very pretty interesting since I quite like Nic when he was young.
I pretty much love watching everyone in the Lee Family....from ah fook, to the twins (Kenix & Florence), to the youngest son (Hawick)...but I think my favorite characters had to be ah Hoi (Ben Wong) and of course ah kwai (Angie Cheung). Ah Hoi because he was such a dorky, but good and kind hearted guy....and ah kwai for being fun and outgoing. Joyce Tang also may ah Suet very darling to watch....and May May (Celine Ma Tai Lo) was very iconic also. She was truly the first "ugly" actress in a heavy role, in a TVB serie and not the ones that look pretty, turned ugly type. However, I think she's not that horrible looking, just a little different.
Kindred Spirit is a great family drama. It teaches us to love and care for our families despite having to grow up or go through rough times. I'm glad that TVB made this serie or else I wouldn't have such a wonderful serie to grow up with while growing up as an ABC.

TVB Series and Asian Popular Culture...
In general, I’m a pretty loyal viewer when it comes to TVB. I rarely touch series from Taiwan, China, Korea, Japan etc. However, I was just thinking about popular series that were such a huge hit in the Asian hemisphere (or at least a huge part of it), and I couldn’t think of any from TVB that reached that status. And by status, I’m judging that the serie was so popular that it played a part in helping propelled its stars from essentially nobodies to immense IDOL popularity and maintained popularity for years in the Asian hemisphere and other Asian communities in the West as well. So which series have been able to do that?
China/Taiwan- Huan Ze Ge Ge aka The Princess Pearl I
Idols: Vicki Zhao, Alec Su, Ruby Lin
These three were huge after Hzgg I, especially Vicki for her portrayal of ‘Little Swallow’. It’s like “who doesn’t know ‘Little Swallow and Wu ah ge”? I know Vicki was from China, and Alec & Ruby were from Taiwan, so perhaps this collaboration and the plot was fresh for many people, and their characters were very well liked. Then there were rumors between Alec-Vicki and Alec-Ruby, and who doesn’t remember the massive Vicki vs Ruby debates. I know, because I participated in some anti-Ruby postings myself! In some ways, I don’t even remember why I loved this serie so much when I saw it. All I remember is that Vicki was very funny and cute as “Little Swallow”, and I love watching her with the emperor and the fifth prince (Wu ah ge). I actually didn’t watch this serie until several years after it first aired, but it was still popular after I watched. This serie was my first serie from China. These three were also so popular that they were invited to act together again in The Princess Pearl II/HZZG 2, and years later in Romance in the Rain.
Taiwan: Meteor Garden
Idols: F4 (Jerry, Vic, Vanness, Ken), Barbie Hsu
I think if you’re Asian, somewhere somehow you’re heard of F4 and Meteor Garden. They were so huge in the Asian community that it’s not even funny. They were huge anywhere with an Asian population actually. People have watched this serie not only once, but probably twice or more. It’s like Titanic, only it’s a serie and it consists of Taiwanese people. Like many, it was my first Taiwanese serie and introduced me to the world of Taiwanese idol series. So what the heck made me and so many others love it so much that it got soooo HUGE? Is it the hairs? Is it the themesong sang by Harlem? Is it because it’s named after Meteors? lol….I don’t know, all I can say is that I loved it a lot years ago, and every time I heard Qing Fei De Yi, I will remember it fondly lol. So I’m placing my bets heavily on the story (which was based on a Japanese manga “Hana Yori Dango” which was very popular for manga fans I believe), good songs, and somewhat good-looking, yet unique guys (I mean face it, without their hair styles, they wouldn’t make F4 that iconic) lol.
Korea: Full House; Jewel in the Palace/ Dae Jang Geum
Idols: Rain aka Bi/ Jung Ji-Hoon; Lee Young-ae
Now, I’m not a fan of Korean series, but to have heard of these names everywhere even though I’m not a fan does say something. With Rain, I’m not sure whether he was popular before Full House, but thank goodness for Wikipedia, it tells me that he actually released an album and starred in another serie before Full House, but Full House was the serie that led him to be recognized in Asia (and also Asian communities on the western hemisphere I suppose).
Now for Jewel in the Palace, I don’t know what the hype is for this one, but reading wikipedia, the series is quite huge (look under Commercial Success section)….even more huge than Full House. I mean I should’ve known anyway, it’s no wonder when I go to Korean restaurants, I’ll see the main actresses’ poster hanging up! Anyway, from wikipedia, this serie is credited to be one of the factors of the Korean wave spreading around East Asia. How’s that for huge?
As for me, my first Korean Series was All About Eve, of which I thought was actually quite good. However, it never led me to watch other Korean series though.
TVB/Hong Kong Series: ??
Idols: ??
Now lets look at TVB and Hong Kong series. To my realization, as of now, I’m having trouble thinking up of series that made such a huge impact compared with those mentioned above. Perhaps War & Beauty? Well it had a good script, and it was a beautiful series, but did it make such a huge impact? Triumph in the Skies? Yea, it propelled S4 to insta stardom in HK, but what about other Asian places? How about Duke of Mount Deer 2000? Or how about older series like The Bund...did it have that huge of an impact?
This boggles my mind, so I want to make a thread on it in AF later, so maybe I would get some insight and opinions from fellow TVB fans there.
